While exploring these districts on foot provides essential atmosphere and discovery, we recognized that players needed a way to traverse the city efficiently once they’d discovered its secrets. Enter the HoverTaxi Fast Travel System.

This post chronicles our journey from concept to implementation, highlighting the design decisions and technical innovations that make HoverTaxi feel both authentically cyberpunk and genuinely fun to use.

Design Philosophy: Fast Travel with Personality

When designing the HoverTaxi system, we established core principles that would guide every implementation decision:

From the start, we knew the fare system needed to balance accessibility with meaningful cost. We settled on a simple but effective formula:

Base fare of 50 credits + 10 credits per distance unit

This means a quick hop between adjacent districts costs 60 credits, while crossing the city might run 150 credits or more. The linear scaling keeps the math transparent while ensuring longer journeys feel appropriately significant.

Discovery Mechanics

One of our most important early decisions was implementing a discovery-based unlock system. You can’t fast-travel to a location you’ve never visited. This design:

  • Encourages initial exploration of the world
  • Rewards players who venture into new districts
  • Preserves the experience of discovering new locations

When you enter a room with a taxi stand for the first time and use the taxi command, that location automatically unlocks in your personal destination list. From that point forward, you can travel there from any other taxi stand in the city.

Rather than instant teleportation, each journey takes time proportional to distance (3 seconds base + 2 seconds per distance unit). This creates a rhythm to travel where:

  • Short hops (5-7 seconds) feel quick and convenient
  • Medium journeys (10-15 seconds) provide atmospheric breaks
  • Long treks (20+ seconds) create moments of anticipation

The timing allows players to appreciate the atmospheric descriptions without feeling like they’re waiting unnecessarily.

Phase 2: Bringing Taxis to Life

AI Driver Personalities

Early testing revealed that repetitive taxi messages felt mechanical and lifeless. We addressed this by implementing varied AI driver personalities with randomized greetings:

  • Professional: “Greetings, citizen. Your safety is my primary function.”
  • Bored: “Yeah, yeah. Where to?”
  • Cheerful: “Welcome aboard! Let’s get you where you need to go!”
  • Efficient: “Destination uploaded. Calculating optimal route.”

These variations are subtle but significant - they transform the taxi from a transport mechanism into a living part of the cyberpunk world, where even the AI drivers have distinct personalities.

Atmospheric Descriptions

The real magic happens during the journey itself. We implemented 62 different atmospheric description variations across multiple categories:

Area-Specific Descriptions: Each of Chiba City’s five area types (Downtown, Industrial, Residential, Waterfront, Slums) has unique descriptions that capture the distinct character of that district. Flying through Downtown means weaving between neon-lit corporate towers. The Industrial district features endless factory complexes and freight drones. The Slums present a darker view of crumbling tenements and trash fires.

Distance-Based Descriptions: Short trips get brief, focused descriptions. Medium journeys include more elaborate atmospheric details. Long flights present epic vistas of the sprawling metropolis.

Transition Descriptions: When traveling between different area types, you get special descriptions that capture the shift from one district to another - watching the gleaming corporate spires give way to grimy industrial zones, or the transformation from waterfront docks to residential arcologies.

The system intelligently selects from these categories to ensure variety while maintaining contextual appropriateness. No two rides feel exactly the same, even on familiar routes.

Phase 3: Dynamic Discovery

Room-Based Configuration

Our initial implementation used hardcoded destination lists, which proved inflexible during world development. We evolved to a completely dynamic system where:

  • Any room can become a taxi stand
  • Destination information lives on the room itself
  • The system automatically discovers available destinations
  • No code changes needed when adding new locations

This architectural shift transformed the HoverTaxi from a fixed-route system into a flexible framework that grows naturally with the world.

Performance Optimization

Module-Level Caching: Discovered destinations are cached when first queried, eliminating repeated database searches. This cache persists until server reload, providing excellent performance for frequently-accessed data.

Tag-Based Queries: Rather than searching all rooms, we use Evennia’s tag system to efficiently locate only taxi stand rooms. This reduces search complexity dramatically in a large world.

The result is a system that feels instant to players while remaining efficient for the server.

Phase 4: Polish and Player Experience

Transaction Transparency

Players deserve to know exactly what happened to their credits. We implemented comprehensive transaction logging that tracks:

  • Every fare deduction with timestamp
  • Refunds when travel is interrupted
  • Clear messaging about costs before travel begins
  • Balance display after every transaction

This transparency builds trust in the economy system and helps players make informed decisions about their travels.

Error Handling and Edge Cases

Real-world testing revealed numerous edge cases that needed elegant handling:

Insufficient Credits: Clear messaging shows exactly how many credits you need versus what you have, preventing frustrating “invalid” errors.

Combat and State Restrictions: You can’t call a taxi while in combat or other restrictive states, with appropriate contextual messaging.

Same-Location Prevention: The system prevents you from spending credits to travel to your current location, with a friendly reminder that you’re already there.

The taxi list command presents information in a clean table format showing:

  • Destination names (with your current location highlighted)
  • Area types
  • Current fares from your location
  • Brief descriptions

This at-a-glance view lets players quickly assess their options and plan their journeys efficiently.

The Complete Journey: A Player’s Experience

Let’s walk through a typical HoverTaxi experience:

You’re exploring Chiba City and discover a new district with a taxi stand. A quick taxi command unlocks this location in your network and shows you’re at a valid pickup point.

Curious about your options, you use taxi list to see all discovered destinations. The table shows you have 500 credits and lists several locations with their fares - the Chatsubo Bar for 80 credits, the Night Market for 60 credits, and a distant Industrial Zone for 120 credits.

You decide to visit the Chatsubo Bar. Typing taxi go chatsubo, you’re greeted by the taxi’s AI: “Welcome aboard! Let’s get you where you need to go!” The system confirms your 80 credit fare and 9-second travel time.

Your credits are deducted, and you climb into the taxi. The vehicle lifts off smoothly as you merge into aerial traffic. Mid-flight, you get an atmospheric description: “You weave through canyons of neon-lit skyscrapers, their surfaces alive with scrolling advertisements and corporate logos.”

The taxi descends smoothly to the Chatsubo Bar’s landing pad. You arrive, the room description automatically displays, and you’re ready to explore your destination. The entire journey took 9 seconds and left you with 420 credits.

Technical Excellence: Under the Hood

Testing and Reliability

The system includes comprehensive automated testing with 22 test cases covering:

  • Basic functionality (commands, fares, timing)
  • Discovery mechanics and unlocking
  • Edge cases and error conditions
  • Transaction logging and refunds
