Enter the Help Ticket System: a comprehensive framework that turns player feedback into actionable development while keeping everyone informed.

This post explores how we designed a system that respects player time, maintains development organization, and creates a genuine dialogue between players and developers.

Design Philosophy: Every Voice Matters

When designing the ticket system, we established core principles that would shape every decision:

The Player Experience: Four Powerful Commands

Bug Reports: bug <description>

You’re exploring the Black Clinic when you notice vendor prices seem inconsistent. Instead of shrugging and moving on, you type:

bug The medical vendor is charging different prices for the same item

Instantly, the system:

  • Creates a tracked issue on GitHub
  • Generates a unique ticket number (#142)
  • Captures your location, character details, and timestamp
  • Notifies the development team via Discord
  • Confirms receipt with your ticket number

You’re not guessing whether anyone saw your report. You have a ticket number. You can check its status anytime. It’s real, it’s tracked, and it matters.

You’ve gotten yourself stuck in a room with broken exits. Rather than logging out in frustration:

This creates a priority support ticket routed directly to staff members who have the permissions and tools to help. Unlike general help topics, support tickets signal “I need actual assistance from a person” and get appropriate attention.

When an error occurs, instead of a cryptic traceback dumped to your screen, you see:

yes    - Report the error and add details
no     - Dismiss (error will be reported automatically)
later  - Save for later review (use 'showerrors' to view)

Responding “yes” opens an editor where you can add context:

I was trying to buy a medkit from the vendor when this happened.
I had just completed a quest and had 500 credits.

This context transforms a generic error into an actionable bug report with the full story. The system automatically includes the technical details (traceback, location, command entered) while your description adds the human context that makes fixing it possible.

Responding “no” dismisses the prompt, but the error still gets reported to staff automatically. You’re not required to spend time on bug reports if you’re in the middle of something important.

Responding “later” saves the error to your pending list. When you have time, showerrors displays all saved errors so you can review and decide which ones warrant detailed reports.

Deduplication Intelligence

The system knows if an error has been reported recently. If ten players trigger the same bug, it doesn’t create ten tickets - it recognizes duplicates and consolidates them. Your time is respected, and the dev team isn’t drowning in redundant reports.

Real-Time Updates: The Notification System

Status Changes You’ll Actually See

When ticket #142 (your vendor bug report) gets fixed and closed on GitHub, you don’t have to keep checking mytickets to find out. Within 15 minutes, you receive an automatic notification:

You might wonder why you should care about the staff interface. Simple: organized developers are responsive developers. When staff can efficiently view, filter, and manage tickets, your reports get addressed faster.

Support staff use @tickets to view all pending support requests. Testers can filter specifically for bugs and errors. Admins see everything. Permission-based filtering ensures the right people see the right tickets without information overload.

Transparency in Action

The system tracks:

  • Current status (open/closed)
  • Labels and categorization
  • Last synchronization time

  • You can see related issues and discussions

For developers:

  • Professional issue tracking with labels, milestones, and project boards
  • Code commits can reference ticket numbers directly
  • Automated workflows can respond to ticket events
  • Full integration with version control

Discord: Team Notifications

When you submit a ticket, the development team gets notified on Discord immediately. This creates real-time awareness without requiring staff to constantly check the game. Urgent issues get fast attention because the right people are informed instantly.

Different ticket types route to different channels:

To prevent spam and maintain system integrity, the ticket system implements intelligent rate limiting:

  • Bug reports: 5 manual submissions per hour (auto-generated errors don’t count)
  • Feature requests: 3 per hour
  • Support tickets: 5 per hour

These limits are generous for genuine use while preventing abuse. If you hit a limit, the system tells you exactly when you can submit again. This keeps the ticket system focused on quality reports while preventing overwhelm.

Future Enhancements: Where We’re Headed

Comment Synchronization

Currently, GitHub comments and discussions don’t sync back to the game. A future enhancement will let you view GitHub comments and updates directly through mytickets, creating fuller context without leaving the game.

Priority Levels

Player-submitted tickets currently have equal priority. Future versions might let players mark tickets as “urgent” (with appropriate limits) to signal critical issues versus quality-of-life improvements.

Voting System

Imagine being able to “upvote” feature requests you want to see. This community-driven prioritization would help developers understand which features have broad appeal versus niche interest.

Staff Assignment

Support tickets might automatically assign to available staff members, ensuring faster response times and clear ownership of issues.

Analytics Dashboard

An in-game dashboard showing ticket system health - average resolution time, most common issues, trending feature requests - would provide transparency about development focus and priorities.

Lessons Learned: Design Principles in Practice

Respect Player Time

Every design decision considered: “Is this worth the player’s time?” Automatic error capture means players don’t have to write reports. Intelligent deduplication means you’re never wasting time reporting duplicates. Clear confirmations mean you never wonder if your report was received.

Close the Loop

Nothing is worse than feedback that vanishes into the void. Status tracking, automatic notifications, and persistent ticket history ensure players always know what happened to their reports. Closing the feedback loop builds trust and encourages continued participation.

Make the Right Thing Easy

The easier it is to report issues, the more issues get reported. Single-command ticket creation with automatic context capture removes friction. When reporting a bug is easier than not reporting it, bug reports flow naturally.

Organize Chaos Efficiently

Player feedback without organization is noise. The system transforms unstructured feedback into organized, trackable tasks with appropriate routing, categorization, and priority. Developers can focus on fixing issues rather than organizing reports.
